The Living Room: Our Never Ending Project
I wrote about this room early on in this foray into blogging, but I feel like a recap is in order, simply due to how much time has passed. It’s been about 3 years since we started the remodel in our living room. It was early into our homeownership and both of us being somewhat new to DIY, we made what I’ve now come to understand to be the cardinal mistake when tackling a home remodel – we bit off more than we could chew. To be honest, we really had no idea what we were getting into with this room, heck with this whole place. I mean, the house…

Painting Wood Paneling
When we bought our house 5 years ago, I was 100% certain the last time it had a makeover was sometime in the ’70s. It’s horrible really. There is dark, wood-veneer paneling all over the second and third floor and really it pains me to look at it. I don’t know about you but I am not into the whole ‘retro but not in a good way’ vibe. After discussion and a bit of research, we decided that painting would be the best and most cost-effective way to update the rooms without having to remove the paneling and then drywall after. The bedroom was the easiest starting point as there…

Year 5
Our house is a kindergartener! Okay not really. The house itself is over 100 years old, but it has been five years since we moved into this lovable train wreck that we call home. As we head into the next year, I’d say the past 12 months have been some of the best we’ve spent here. The big highlight, of course, was the recent bedroom remodel. I’m looking forward to not sleeping in a blistering hot room this summer. (So excited!) But more than that, the new bedroom has become a restful haven for me. I’m finding that I enjoy simply being in the space. Now there are…

The Bedroom Chronicles Pt. 3 – It’s Finally Finished!
With our new drywalled ceiling and (some of) the ugly paneling gone, we pushed ahead with our bedroom remodel. A new bedroom set with actual nightstands was first on the list. After years of cramming together on a full-size bed, I was desperate for an upgrade. Giddy with the thrill of our new purchase, we both set into full work mode. There was not going to be any slacking on this remodel, not with a deadline in place. My husband was even kind enough to plan out our week, making sure we got the most out of each day. But as is usually the case with our home remodel projects,…

Change Happens
Happy March to you all! We hope you’ve had a wonderful year so far. Surprise! We’ve made a few changes to our little blog and will be adding/adjusting in the weeks to come. When we started this endeavor, beyond hoping to post more often, we had hadn’t put much stock in the success of this blog. Yes, it’s still more of a hobby than anything else, we believe this will not only offer a new perspective but also motivate us to write more often. We have a new title! Misadventures in Home Renovation will now be called Charming Imperfection. MIHR is a fun name, but it’s a mouthful, and unless…

The Bedroom Chronicles Pt. 2 – What now?
With the drop tiles, track, and all the scrap wood removed, the husband and I had to stop and weigh our options. It was obvious why there were drop tile ceilings, now that we had seen first hand the condition of the plaster. I thought I had better pictures of the ceiling but apparently, that is not the case. Shocking, and honestly, a little frustrating. Can nothing in this house be simple and easy? (As Christy has so expertly phrased it, my house needs Jesus, plain and simple.) That left us with the dilemma of what to do next. Given the state of things, neither I or the hubby were…

The Bedroom Chronicles – Part 1
To give you a bit of backstory, we have been meaning for some time to move down from the 3rd floor which is a converted attic space. That’s where our bedroom currently resides. With no central A/C, summers have become a nightmare with temperatures on the 3rd floor easily reaching 100

Roll Up Your Sleeves: Reclaiming the Yard Pt. 2
April showers bring May flowers or at least that’s how the saying goes. Around here it’s been rain, rain, and more rain punctuated by a few sunny days. After a week straight, we have sun and I managed to slip out and get a few pictures of our now nice-looking garden beds.

It’s That Time of Year Already: Reclaiming the Yard (Pt. 1)
Yes, it’s that time of year again. Spring is in full swing with summer close at its heels. Which means it’s time for us to roll up our sleeves and dig in. First stop: the lawn. The patchy, crabgrass-and-weed-ridden lawn that has been a sore spot the last few years. And if you’ve been following along thus far, you know all too well of my lawncare gripes and my lack of a green thumb. (I did not get that gene despite having several family members who are fantastic gardeners.) As far as the yard goes, we’ve done little lawn care this last year except spreading Scotts Weed and Feed when…
